Triple action on blood lipid control
The benefits of OLECOL® have been assessed in three clinical studies, which have demonstrated the dual action of the ingredient: Improved blood lipid control in both subjects with hypercholesterolemia and overweight + strong antioxidant properties.
Blood Lipid Control
A 12-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was designed to investigate the effects of a daily dose of 250 mg OLECOL® on subjects with elevated cholesterol levels. Olecol® showed a significant effect on blood lipid levels after the 12-month intervention. The levels of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly decreased in the Olecol® group compared to the placebo group. Furthermore, a significant difference in the total cholesterol/HDL ratio between the Olecol® group and the placebo group was shown. This ratio predicts the subject’s risk of developing atherosclerosis, and by extension cardiovascular diseases.
A second study was carried out to investigate triglycerides (TG) and TG/HDL-c ratio profiles in subjects with overweight. The 4 weeks randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with a daily dose of 250 mg Olecol® showed a significantly improved TG/HDL-c ratio in the group receiving Olecol® treatment compared to the placebo group. In addition, triglyceride levels tended to decrease after 4 weeks supplementation.
An oxidative control study, also carried out with a single dose of 250mg of OLECOL® has measured 1) the oxidant status of the blood lipids and 2) the circulating levels of metabolites of the extract in the plasma and urine of the participants. Olecol® showed to have antioxidant properties and protect from LDL oxidation. Oxidative stress leads to the production of damaging free radicals. These molecules have been showed to be linked to vascular inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and subsequently to a high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.
Mode of Action
The mode of action of Olecol® is twofold.
First of all olive polyphenols have a unique mode of action on cholesterol excretion. 1) The liver is stimulated to secrete cholesterol into the bile. 2) The cholesterol levels in the bile increase and subsequently discharged into the duodenum. 3) This leads to more excretion of cholesterol through the faeces.
Secondly, a daily dose of 250 mg Olecol® has strong antioxidant properties. This leads to the protection of the HDL [good] cholesterol, and limits the oxidation of the LDL [bad] cholesterol – which is linked to an increased risk of CV events.
